A Farewell to Arms is American writer and Nobel prize winner Ernest Hemingway’s first best-seller, the one that propelled him to fame. During The Great War, Hemingway drove Red Cross ambulances on the Italian Front, getting seriously wounded by shrapnel in 1918, and this provided him with plenty of material for this novel, which was first published in 1929. The novel is a first-person account of an American, Frederic Henry, serving in World War I as a lieutenant in the Italian Army’s ambulance corps, who has a love affair with an English nurse, Catherine Barkley.
